The DREAM becomes reality!

ABSL announces the formation of a new women’s basketball franchise, Auckland DREAM.

ABSL will be represented by an exciting new basketball franchise in the 2018 Women’s Basketball Championship (WBC).

The Auckland Dream will play in tier one of Basketball New Zealand’s revamped  national competition, where the country’s top eight women’s teams will compete in tournaments and home and away fixtures.

The new Auckland Dream franchise have an experienced coaching team led by long-standing Tall Ferns assistant Aik Ho and are assembling a talented roster to make a strong push at the WBC. By combining the playing, coaching and organisational resources of the Waitakere, Auckland, and Counties Manukau basketball associations, the Dream have been able to create an elite, professional environment for the region’s best female basketballers.

Aside from competing in the WBC, the Auckland Dream will be able to provide a pathway for local female basketball players who aspire to gain overseas professional contracts, or to represent the Tall Ferns.

With a comprehensive development program to run alongside the main squad, the Dream will also seek to strengthen the next generation of players, many of whom aspire to earn an overseas college basketball scholarship. Auckland Dream Development Scholarships will be awarded to promising young female players, who will get access to mentoring and personal development, assistance with basketball related costs and the opportunity to train with the core Auckland Dream squad.

The Auckland Dream will be the most visible aspect of a concerted push by ABSL to increase female involvement in basketball in the region. Whilst basketball is reaching juggernaut status in terms of growth in interest and participation, there remains a gulf between male and female numbers.

As well as the flagship Auckland Dream, ABSL is rolling out a number of other initiatives aimed specifically at females. These include increased access to tournaments, ‘Girls Got Game’ coaching clinics, and the newly formed Auckland Women’s Basketball League.
