Over the weekend the Schick Championships - Secondary Schools Nationals was held in Palmerston North at the Central Energy Trust Arena. A total of 7 boys and girls teams based in Central and West Auckland competed and represented their friends, families and schools with pride. Mt Albert Grammar, St Peter’s College, Kelston Boys High School and Auckland Grammar competed against top boys high school teams from all around New Zealand in the ‘AA’ boy’s competition. Meanwhile Auckland Girls Grammar, Mt Albert Grammar and Massey High School competed in the ‘AA’ girl’s competition. All teams travelled down with high expectations and looked to be crowned national champions.
The tournament was held from the 2nd-7th October and produced a tough 5 days of competition. All teams had to be physically and mentally prepared for a number of tough games. Coaches and managers played a massive part in terms of each athlete’s recovery. A total of 24 ‘AA’ boys teams and 24 ‘AA’ girls teams made the Schick Championships interesting as any team could beat each other on any given day.
In the boys competition Mt Albert Grammar produced a great effort by claiming 3rd place overall by beating Christchurch’s Christs College in the 3/4th place game. Auckland Grammar managed to claim 6th spot, while Kelston Boys High School and St Peter’s College should still be proud of their efforts by not giving up in each game they played. Both teams placed 21st and 24th respectively.
In the girls competition the three schools representing Central and West Auckland played well enough to be placed in the top 10. Auckland Grammar Girls School placed 3rd overall, as they managed to beat Hamilton’s Melville High School in the 3/4th place game. Mt Albert Grammar secured 5th spot, while Massey High School gained 9th place.
Overall the Schick Championships was a great experience for all teams as most of the players were in their last year of high school. A huge congratulations to Mele Latu (Auckland Girls Grammar) and Sharne Pupuke-Robati (Mt Albert Grammar) for being selected in the Girls ‘AA’ All-Tournament Team.
Another big congratulations to Tom Higgins (Auckland Grammar) and Mandela Baledrokadroka (Mt Albert Grammar) who worked and played hard to get selected in the Boys ‘AA’ All-Tournament Team. This is a great achievement for these four individuals as they were chosen as one of the top 10 players in high school basketball.
A huge thank you to all the supporters, coaches and managers who helped out during this tournament! Without you none of this would be possible.
