The Let's Korero Women's Basketball forum was held on Dec 1 at Pulman Park, there was a decent crowd in attendance and all who were there were treated to some insightful speakers.
The guest speakers were:

Simone Spencer - Portfolio Manager: Women & Girls, Goods Sports® & Coach Development, Aktive Sport and Recreation
Rachel Froggatt- CEO, Women In Sport Aotearoa, Secretary General, International Working Group (IWG) on Women and Sport Secretariat & Conference 2018-2022
Nicole Dunn - Head of Female Engagement & ICC Women’s World Cup, NZ Cricket
Nicola Demaine - Sports Director, James Cook High School. Head coach of Samoa womens national football team.
Teena Enoka - Events and Marketing, Etco Auckland Dream
They covered topics including advocacy, leadership, coaching for women and girls, and participation approaches specific to women.
Identified were some immediate actions that we can take in basketball, and a number of ideas for ourselves and others within basketball in NZ to develop their girls and women basketball.
Some of the major talking points include:
1. Addressing structural barriers to participation, from other sports barriers have included facilities where basketball is played, uniform design etc.
2. Participation barriers, these may include the format of the game, play and training times etc.
3. Identifying motivators for participation and how to enhance these, including social motivators.
A massive thank you to all those spoke and to the audience who came along, this is a crucial time for the development of women's basketball so ngā mihi to you all.
This was the start of a journey to develop participation and our pathways to better support women and girls in participation, coaching, officiating and leading basketball.
