The Auckland Jaguars club is championed by Coach PJ (Peter Josephs) who took over the day-to-day running in 2017. PJ played in the NZ NBL for the Auckland Stars, Harbour heat and Taranaki Mountainairs so the club has a real basketball brain at the helm.
The Jaguars train out of Saint Kentigern Boys School Gym, named the Jubilee Sports Centre, 82 Shore Road, Remuera.
They have Junior Sessions on Tuesday nights, from 5 years old up to 13 years old. The club will be expanding in Term 2, offering senior training sessions for U15, U17 and U19, covering all age groups for school kids and teenagers. Ultimately they would like to have basketball training sessions and competitions from Miniball to Masters.
The Auckland Jaguars aim to be all inclusive, and offer a range of programs that cater to everyone in the community, of all ages, skill levels and needs. We are in the building phase of club basketball in Auckland City, so what clubs do now will determine whether we can build something sustainable, and beneficial to the our basketball playing community.
They have beginners in the club and also have some up and coming players who are pushing for representative honours. Being an official Basketball Auckland Club, all their players who are skilled and hungry enough to play representatives basketball can be fed straight into the Basketball Auckland program.
Auckland Jaguars prides itself on teaching the correct fundamentals, and ensures that their coaching and basketball program is of a high standard. They push confidence and resilience building, through drills and gameplay in training. For those who wish to play organised competitions, because of their official affiliation with Basketball Auckland and Auckland Basketball Services Limited (ABSL), they have teams competing in the Junior Club League running out of the St Kentigern Boys School Gym on Saturdays. The competition caters to U9 up to U13 age groups. There’s also the Super City Club League, running out of the Bruce Pulman Centre in Papakura, that our club can participate in for the U15 to U19 age groups.
They have U9 up to U19s playing across these competitions, and all kids love it, as it’s for all levels, and gives the opportunity to play others from all around the city.
The Auckland Jaguars goal is to build on their current 100 member base, and provide training sessions for seniors, which will start in Term 2, of this year. They will look to have more club sessions opening up at Barfoot and Thompson Stadium in Kohimaramara and ensure they service the entire Eastern Suburbs area with our high quality brand of basketball. They are also wanting to open our special needs session which will truely make us an all inclusive club, ensuring that there is a safe place to learn basketball for everyone.
Wish the Auckland Jaguars all the best for an expansive and successful 2020!
