U17 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup - Belarus
ABSL wants to congratulate and wish good luck to Sharne Pupuke-Robati (Counties Manukau) and Shauna Povey (Waitakere West Auckland) who will be representing New Zealand in the U17 FIBA Women’s World Cup held in Belarus in a couple of days. The tournament will start on Saturday 21 July and will finish up on Sunday 29 July.
Both Sharne and Shauna have had successful seasons during their U19 representative season and WBC campaign with the Auckland Dream. Leading up to the World Cup the team will have a couple of warm up games which will help develop their schemes and concepts.
The assembled U17 NZ Women’s team will be making history as it will be the very first FIBA World Cup ever attended by a New Zealand Women’s age group team. Sharne and Shauna will also be accompanied by ABSL/Auckland Dream coaches Aik Ho and Tania Hunter who will be assisting head coach Lori McDaniel. Both Aik and Tania have had a great WBC season as coaches with the Auckland Dream, claiming 3rd spot in the WBC finals tournament which was held a couple of weeks ago.
The U17 NZ Women’s team is in Group C and will have a tough first game against Spain. Argentina and Hungary are also in their pool so the tournament will be a great experience for all as they get to compete against some of the best female athletes from around the world.
Play hard and good luck ladies!
