U17 Aon Nationals Re-Cap

Representative Season

Over the first week of the school holidays the U17 Aon Nationals were held at ASB Stadium in Wellington. It was a great showcase of up and coming U17 talent from all around the country and the tournament did not disappoint. The U17 Auckland Premiers; coached by Jason Crummer did ABSL proud as they made the Grand Final match-up against host team Wellington.

Wellington was led by U17 New Zealand representative and eventual tournament MVP Ezrah Vaigafa who competed at the U17 FIBA World Cup just a few days before the tournament started. The game was close throughout all four quarters but Wellington drew energy from the home crowd to win 95-90 in an entertaining match up of different playing styles.

A massive achievement for the Auckland Premiers claiming 2nd place in a tournament filled with exceptional young athletes. A huge congrats to all ABSL teams who played hard and made their respective associations proud. In the boys competition Waitakere West Auckland and Counties Manukau boys teams for came 10th and 13th place respectively. In the girls competition Waitakere West managed to take home 6th place while Auckland Counties combined team managed to come away 15th place.

The tournament was a great experience for all the athletes as they got to go up against some of the top U17 players from around New Zealand. This definitely helps top-aged players from this season with their development and transition for the U19 representative season next year. The bottom-aged players from this U17 season will have this vital experience up their sleeves in order to improve for next year’s U17 representative season.

With Auckland Premiers making the grand final, Sataan Tawera and Robbie Coman were deservedly named in the tournament team, congratulations to both athletes!

Thank you to all coaches, managers, parents and supporters for their dedication and commitment throughout the U17 representative season. The representative is not over yet as the U15 Aon Nationals will be held @ Bruce Pulman Arena in Takanini from Wednesday 18 July (tomorrow) to Saturday 21 July.

Make sure to come down support our ABSL U15 teams!
