Over the Easter weekend ABSL was proud to help host the Super City Easter Slam Tournament in Papakura. More than 200 games took place at Rosehill College and the brand new Pulman Arena. Opening day was a special occasion as the tournament was the first ever event that was held at Pulman Arena. An opening ceremony took place to acknowledge the importance of the brand new facility. The magnitude of the Easter Slam being held at Pulman Arena was huge because it gave the ABSL community a first-hand experience of being involved in a world class facility. The arena will be hosting some matches for the World Masters Games. The four day tournament was also a great developmental opportunity for all ABSL associated teams (CMBB, BA and WWABi). Teams from Australia including, St. Monica’s College, Kingston Cavaliers and Dandenong Rangers flew over the ditch to compete and provided a bit of Trans-Tasman rivalry, which was great for increasing the level of competitiveness. Other New Zealand based associations such as Canterbury, Central Country, Te Tai Tokerau and Harbour made the trip to South Auckland give our ABSL teams great challenges. Phoenix League teams also entered the tournament which was a great experience for these young players to test their skills against numerous representative teams.
Multiple age grades competed in the tournament and included U15, U17 and U19 Girls and Boys. Teams were split into two divisions (Division 1 and Division 2) to ensure an even competition for all teams. Over the four days supporters got to witness some great talent playing at a high level. Some national coaches were present so it was a good chance to scout ABSL associated players. The tournament was also a great indicator to see where all ABSL representative teams are at. This gave all coaches a chance to look areas that need to be improved on for the upcoming Super City Competition. Overall the tournament was a great experience for everyone involved. A huge thank you to all ABSL staff, referees, coaches, managers, volunteers, and supporters who helped the Easter Slam Tournament become a success.
