Success @ Auckland Dream ’Girls Got Game’ Clinic & WBC Opening Weekend Info!

The Auckland Dream was proud to host the ‘Girls Got Game’ basketball clinic last Saturday at Rosehill College, Papakura. It was a success as 60 girls came to work hard and learn from our very own Auckland Dream players and coaches. Participants ranged from Year 5 beginners to Year 13 representative players. This was a milestone event for the newly formed WBC team as the Auckland Dream's ultimate goal is to grow the women's game by enhancing basketball opportunities for girls, and to show an aspirational pathway to the WBC and Tall Ferns.

The purpose of the 'Girls Got Game' clinic is to provide a low cost opportunity for girls to access high level coaching without having to compete and train with boys. By having Dream players assist our coaches, the girls were able to work in smaller groups with kids of similar age and ability. This provided a less pressured and more enjoyable experience for each of the athletes who are new to basketball. The clinic also allowed the higher level participants to receive quality coaching.

For these young female players to have access to some of NZ's best coaches which include Tall Ferns Assistant and Dream head coach, Aik Ho, Dream and NZ U17 Women’s Assistant coach, Tania Hunter, and experienced New Zealand age group coach and the Dream’s technical advisor Ollie Bryce, is a wonderful opportunity for the development of female basketball in Auckland.

A huge thank you to Rosehill College and Rosehill Raptors for hosting the clinic!

With the pre – season done and dusted, the Dream now look ahead to the WBC Opening Weekend Tournament at the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre in Tauranga. Their first game will tip – off this Friday 4th May at 12pm. Our Dream take on the Harbour Breeze, who will be looking for revenge from their loss in the inaugural Ross Williams Cup game a couple of weeks ago. If you are keen on watching our Auckland Dream girls take on the best WBC teams around New Zealand, there will be livestreaming available throughout the whole tournament.

Safe travels and good luck girls!
