The Auckland Dream WBC pre-season campaign officially got underway last Friday night with a hard-fought win over the Harbour Breeze at Epsom Girls Grammar School. The game was intense throughout all four quarters and a number of lead changes were exchanged. Needless to say both teams were evenly matched and the 55-48 victory was well earned.
The Ross Williams Cup was on the line in the ‘Battle of the Bridge’. Ross Williams is a huge advocate for women’s basketball in the Auckland region and has been involved in basketball for over 50 years. A huge thank you to Ross’ daughter Aimee Williams for attending and presenting the cup on Ross’ behalf.
A pre-season invitational tournament also took place last weekend and featured the Dream’s Reserve/Development squad and features up and coming female athletes from the U17 and U19 Counties Manukau, West Waitakere and Auckland teams. Waikato Country and Rotorua also made their way up to Auckland to test themselves against both Auckland Dream teams.
This Saturday 28th April the Auckland Dream will be giving back to the community and inspiring the future of women’s basketball. The “Girls Got Game’ clinic will take place at Rosehill College, Papakura and will be catering for Year 5 – Year 13 female athletes. The Dream’s coaching staff and players will be coaching at the clinic so this is a good opportunity to learn from some of the best basketball coaches in New Zealand. The Dream will also be taking on a tough Waikato Wizards squad in their final pre-season game before the WBC season commences on Friday 4thMay in Tauranga.
Tip-off vs Waikato Wizards is at 2pm.
Good luck girls!
