AUCKLAND DREAM & MIT LAUNCH DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

AUCKLAND DREAM & MIT LAUNCH DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

Auckland Dream have extended their range of opportunities for female basketballers with the exciting launch of their unique diploma programme based at Pulman Arena.

In collaboration with the School of Sport at Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT), the Diploma in Applied Sport, Recreation and Exercise will immerse students in a practical hands-on programme combining academic study and basketball specific industry experience. Outside of their classwork, students will be interns, actively participating in activities ranging from delivering basketball skills sessions at schools and clubs through to game day management at Auckland Dream home games.

By engaging students in a practical learning experience while they complete the diploma, the course will enable the students to pursue careers not only in basketball but numerous other career opportunities such as school sports coordinator, recreation programmer, sports specific coach, coaching coordinator, sports administrator, event manager or personal trainer. The students may also choose to continue their studies towards a Bachelor in Applied Sport and Exercise Science.

Auckland Dream General Manager, Bevan Murray, says the diploma is very exciting as it addresses a number of areas of need. "Basketball, like other sports, is seriously in need of more female coaches, managers, administrators and leaders. With the huge growth in basketball playing numbers, it is important that there are sufficient people qualified to manage the basketball programmes, coach and manage teams, plan and run basketball events and to become leaders within the sector. To be able to work with a great organisation like MIT School of Sport to offer a female specific programme is very special and further strengthens the relationship with MIT who are already our Sports Performance partners".

MIT Course Supervisor, Fran Serrano, says "We are very excited to be delivering a women specific programme contextualised to basketball. We have been involved with Basketball NZ and Auckland Dream for a few years now and this programme will continue to grow our engagement and commitment to basketball. We look forward to 2020 and an exciting year working out of Pulman Arena".
