The ‘AA’ Schick National Secondary Schools Basketball Championships were held over the first week of the school holidays at the Central Energy Trust Arena in Palmerston North. A number of Auckland-based schools qualified and travelled down to compete against the best secondary schools from around New Zealand.
With the tournament being the pinnacle Secondary Schools basketball tournament of the year and the season coming to an end, each school was eager to prove that they were worthy of becoming 2018 National Champions in their respective boys and girls competitions.
A great experience for all schools involved as high level basketball was played throughout the six-day tournament. No doubt a massive learning curve for all Year 11 and Year 12 athletes who will be keen to get back for next year’s tournament. For all Year 13 athletes, this was the last year of Secondary Schools basketball competition and we wish these athletes the best for the future.
Congratulations to Sharne Pupuke-Robati (Mt Albert Grammar School), Shalom Broughton (Saint Kentigern College) and Anzac Risetto (Auckland Grammar School) for earning tournament team selections!
