The Auckland DREAM organisation was formed in late 2017 by ABSL as part of a multi-faceted plan to engage and inspire young women through the sport of basketball. The most visible aspect of this plan is the Auckland Dream womens team which represents the region in the elite Division 1 of the Women’s Basketball Championship (WBC).
Aside from competing in the WBC, Auckland Dream will be able to provide a pathway for local female basketball players who aspire to gain overseas professional contracts, or to represent the Tall Ferns.
With a comprehensive development program to run alongside the main squad, the Dream will also seek to strengthen the next generation of players, many of whom aspire to earn an overseas college basketball scholarship. Auckland Dream Development Scholarships will be awarded to promising young female players, who will get access to mentoring and personal development, assistance with basketball related costs and the opportunity to train with the core Auckland Dream squad.
ABSL and Auckland Dream are rolling out a number of other initiatives aimed specifically at females. These include increased access to tournaments, ‘Girls Got Game’ coaching clinics, and the newly formed ‘Dream League’ women’s premier club league.
